The University and college examinations for the previous academic year, across Maharashtra, were postponed, as the state has been observing coronavirus lockdown since March 25, 2020. Keeping these concerns in mind, the University Grant Commission (UGC) recently released a new set of guidelines directing the respective state universities to take a decision about pending examinations, new admissions and the schedule for the academic year 2020-21.

With an aim to address the same, State Higher Education Minster, Uday Samant, on Tuesday, May 5, 2020, held a video conference with Mumbai university Vice Chancellor (VC), other university VCs and respective officials, and further decided that the government will take a decision about the state level Enterance Test (CET) in the next 2 days. The team also discussed possibilities of arranging additional centres in the state, to ensure students don't have to travel longer distances post the lockdown is lifted in Maharashtra.

Besides this, several other plans like an online viva for MPhil and PhD students, carry-forward system (for admissions), putting a hold on final year examinations etc. were also discussed at the meeting, and a report was prepared with suggestions. This would be further discussed with CM Uddhav Thackeray and Governor Koshyari, and a final decision would be taken. It is said that the announcements will be made only once the teams get a nod from the higher officials.

On the other hand, the High Court has asked the state goverment to declare Maharashtra SSC and HSC board examination results by June 10, 2020. The state education department, in a recent announcement, asked local civic bodies and district officials to allow examiners to travel amidst the lockdown for paper assessment. Teachers can ask for the papers to be delivered and picked up, or can travel using private or public mode of transport. The decision was taken considering the current scenario of coronavirus spread in Maharashtra.
