The Bombay High Court said that it is high time that traffic constables should get respect. The HC said this in a statement during a hearing of a PIL filed by traffic constable Sunil Toke who alleged of corruption in the traffic department.

Arguing with a traffic police constable and hitting them is not right, said the HC. In the last few months, such cases have increased manifold where motorists or riders were seen arguing with traffic constables over jumping a signal or not wearing a helmet.

Last year, traffic constable Sunil Toke had filed a plea alleging rampant corruption in the traffic department. The court then converted the plea into a PIL where it directed the department to submit a report on the steps taken to curb the corruption.

A bench of Justice Naresh Patil and NW Sambre said,

Many times you can see the traffic constable standing in a corner and chatting. Sometimes, if he stops a motorist for a traffic norm violation, they get into an argument. This can’t continue. The constables must conduct themselves in a way that their stature increases and that they command respect.”

The bench also suggested that the traffic department should provide all constables with cameras, mobile vans and to move around.

If a constable stops a motorist saying he has committed some violation, then that should be the final word. No unnecessary arguments must follow,” the bench said.
