More than 16,000 Mumbaikars fined for spitting in public

As per reports, the civic body had imposed a fine of INR 200 if one was caught violating the rule and spitting in a public area. So far, the department has collects INR 33-lakh as fine from people flouting the rules.

Over the last few months, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed strict guidelines, with an aim to maintain cleanliness in the city of Mumbai. Officials informed that the ones who are caught spitting in the city will have to pay fine, and over the last 10 months, the marshals assigned for the job of checking the same, have collected INR 33 lakh as fine from people violating this rule in public. 

Information regarding the same was published in the Indian Express. The report stated that a total of 16,659 citizens were caught for the same and fine of INR 200 to INR 1200 was collected for not following the directives.

Meanwhile, information shared by the municipal corporation also revealed that over 2800 people were caught in Kurla and Sakinaka, which led to a total fine amount of INR 5.59 lakh. On the other hand, INR 3.40 lakh from Malad.

Besides this, INR 3.89 lakh was collected from areas in and near Fort and Churchgate. Other nearby areas like Byculla, Dongari, Malabar Hill, which have a large amount of visitors and are often populated due to the same reported violations too due to which INR 11.58 lakh fine by collected from over 5,700 citizens.

Steps are being taken to ensure people maintain hygiene in the city as it is important in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Despite several warnings, people form crowd, do not maintain social distance and do not wear masks when in public. To strengthen these guidelines, BMC had imposed a fine of INR 200 if one was caught without a mask, and owing to this INR 59.82 crore worth fine has been collected from more than 29 lakh citizens in Mumbai.

On the other hand, the state government has also planned to control ticket-less commuters in Mumbai local trains and the railway department has caught several passengers either without a ticket or a fake ID card while travelling on the train. As of now, the government has permitted only workers from the essential services on the Mumbai local. However, the pandemic has affected several businessmen and workers in and around Mumbai who depend on the train for their commute, eventually forcing them to board by violating the rules.
