A well-equipped four-storied hospital for medical treatment, surgery of pets and stray animals is being set up on one acre plot of Mumbai Municipal Corporation at Mahalakshmi Dhobi Ghat by the end of the year. The municipal corporation's first incinerator for dead animals is going to start this month.

When domestic animals and stray animals die, the big question is how to dispose of their dead bodies. The Municipal Corporation had decided to start incinerators at three places to cremate the dead bodies of animals. These incinerators will be started at Mahalakshmi in the city, Malad in the western suburbs and Deonar in the eastern suburbs. For this, the municipality is going to spend seventeen and a half crore rupees. Among them, the animal crematorium at Malad is starting in August 2023, a crematorium facility will be available free of charge for pet dogs, stray dead dogs, cats, birds. Therefore, the corpses of the animals going to the landfill will be properly cremated henceforth.

The Municipal Corporation's first animal hospital with a capacity of 300 animals is being constructed on the back plot of Arthur Road Jail at Mahalakshmi and its work has also been completed. This hospital is being constructed on the line of "Build, Use" in association with Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Mumbai Municipal Corporation and its work will be completed by December 2023, said Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal. Sir Dorabaji Tata Trust was awarded the contract to build this hospital in 2018.

There is only one hospital for animals in Parel, Mumbai for the treatment of animals. In the past few years, the number of stray and domestic animals, dogs, has increased significantly in Mumbai. The incidence of animal diseases has also increased. At the same time, the number of diseases transmitted from animals to humans has also increased. But in Mumbai there is only one hospital of Municipal Corporation at Khar. Also there are around 200 private clinics all over the place. Elite families can afford private clinic rates for their pet dogs, animals. But poor families cannot afford to treat their pets. Also, free, stray animals have to get their diseases on their body. Therefore, the Municipal Corporation had decided to start its own veterinary hospital.

According to this, in 2018, the Municipal Corporation had searched for a place and prepared a proposal for setting up a hospital. The dog control office of the Municipal Corporation is currently located on the 3045.40 square metre plot behind the Arthur Road Jail and a task order was given to build this hospital on that site. Tata Trust was chosen to build and run the hospital on this site.

A 30-year agreement has been signed with the Tata Trust to operate the hospital on a 'build, operate and transfer' basis. In the original proposal, it was mentioned that pets of families below the poverty line will be treated at a discounted rate in this hospital. Also, free treatment will be given to injured, sick and stray animals in this hospital.
