Despite a fall in COVID-19 cases, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to tread cautiously and declared that the city will continue to follow Level 3 unlock rules. However, the state government’s norms would have placed it under level one.

As per the Level 3 restrictions, malls, theatres, and multiplexes, which are allowed in Level 1 and 2, will remain shut in Mumbai, said an official.

Due to the ongoing restrictions and rising cases, the Mumbai local trains were closed for the general public. But, the offices are allowed to operate with limited staff and COVID-related protocols. Therefore, Mumbaikars have been facing a lot of issues in commuting to work daily. The commuters have demanded to resume the local train services as the positivity rate in the city declines.

Meanwhile, BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal stated that suburban train travel may not be permitted for all immediately. The BMC would first permit women to travel as and when a decision on this issue will be taken, Chahal added.

The situation needs to improve further to get Mumbai to level 2, after which this decision (on suburban travel) will be taken, he said.

At present, travelling in suburban train is restricted to essential and medical workers. Moreover, teachers involved in the assessment process of the Class 10 examinations will be allowed to travel. This will continue until next week at least, said an official.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani said the BMC will review the situation again next week and then decide on further scaling up relaxations.

On the other hand, the state task force asserted that the highly virulent ‘Delta plus’ variant of the novel coronavirus could stoke the third wave in Maharashtra. Following this, the Thackeray-led government stated that it would stick to the five-level unlock system that came into force earlier this month.
