Mumbai Monsoon: Rain-Related Accidents, Deaths Increase Every Year

The municipality had increased its focus on the safety of major Chowpatty namely Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu and beaches such as Versova, Aksa and Gorai. It has been decided to appoint 120 trained security guards at all major intersections.

Mumbai is famous for its Monsoon season. Every year in and around Mumbai, during Monsoon people take a trip to Juhu beach, Marine Drive, Bandstand, Bandra Fort, Kharghar Falls, Bushi Dam, etc., to enjoy the warmth of the season. Some tend to make a visit despite alerts and warnings issued by the officials resulting in drowning incidents and deaths making it a hotspot for such fatal accidents.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) keep alerting people about the high tides and risks of being around a water body during Monsoon Season, still people chose to visit such places and their happy trip ends on a tragic note.

 Every year hundreds of deaths are reported after the deceased were on a trip to sea shore or lakes or dams.

In a similar incident that took place recently, on July 9, a 27-year-old woman allegedly drowned in Bandra Sea. Her body was recovered on July 10 by BMC and was handed over to the Mumbai Police for further investigation. The woman, identified as Jyoti Sonar, had visited Bandstand with her husband and kids and other family members to enjoy her Sunday evening. The couple went down on rocks to click pictures and suddenly a high wave came and dragged them into the water. The husband was saved by the people who were present on the spot, but the woman disappeared in the water.

In another tragic incident around same period, two Mumbai men drowned in a lake at Lonavala on July 8. The two 35-year-old men were on a picnic with four others. A 29-year-old woman friend of the deceased, who had also entered the water body. After wandering into the water body, they slipped and struggled to stay afloat. They desperately called out for help. Local residents immediately rushed to their aid. They were taken to the hospital and there the two men were declared brought dead.

A major accident that was averted at Aksa beach in Malad last week. As many as 19 tourists were fortunately saved from drowning due to the vigilance of lifeguards. Tourists were literally pulled into the water in a crater created by a natural eddy in the sea.

Last month, in June, five teenagers were drowned at Juhu beach, while only one of them was rescued. All others were found dead. After this, the municipality had increased its focus on the safety of major Chowpatty namely Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu and beaches such as Versova, Aksa and Gorai. It has been decided to appoint 120 trained security guards at all major intersections. Earlier, 94 lifeguards were appointed by the fire brigade on contract basis.

Some other casualties and deaths are reported every year for various reasons relating to the Monsoon. In the last week of June 2023, 26 incidents of tree fall, 15 incidents of short-circuit and five incidents of collapse or partial collapse of houses were reported. These incidents too every year lead to several deaths every year.

It is pertinent to note that the BMC has received around 400 complaints of tree-falling. Additionally, six incidents of house collapse were also reported in a week.
