Amid rising prices of CNG, on Thursday, April 7, the Mumbai taximen’s Union demanded that minimum cab fares in the city should be hiked too.

The Union has requested to revise the minimum taxi fare from INR 25 to INR 30 with immediate effect.

As per the report of the Khatua Committee, appointed to look into taxi tariffs, if the CNG price is increased by more than 25 per cent, the cab fare should be revised without any delay.

The CNG price has now been increased by INR 7. Surprisingly, after the last fare revision, the price of CNG was increased by more than 35 per cent. However, the transport department is not bothered about revising the taxi fare even though the CNG price has been increased by more than 35 per cent, Mumbai Taximen Union General Secretary was quoted as saying by Mid-day.

He further shared that poor taxi drivers who are already suffering because of the COVID-19-induced lockdown cannot afford the loss incurred due to CNG price increase.

Moreover, the petrol and diesel prices have also touched sky high in the city after a spike of INR 10 per litre for 16 days within a month. Therefore, the Congress and the NCP, allies of the three-party MVA government-led by Uddhav Thackeray, accused the BJP-led Narendra Modi government of looting the poor.
