The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified 19 days between June and September when high tides exceeding 4.5 metres are expected along Mumbai's coastline, raising the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas if accompanied by heavy rainfall.
According to the civic body, the high-tide calendar has been shared with all ward offices and disaster management units as part of monsoon preparedness measures. Officials have been directed to remain alert on the identified dates and ensure quick response in the event of flooding or other weather-related emergencies.
Civic authorities noted that heavy rainfall coinciding with high tides can slow down the discharge of stormwater into the sea, increasing the risk of inundation in vulnerable parts of the city. Pumping stations, disaster response teams and flood-control mechanisms have been kept on standby to tackle such situations.
The BMC has advised citizens, particularly those residing in flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and follow weather and civic advisories. Residents have also been urged to avoid venturing into the sea or visiting coastal locations during periods of high tide and rough weather.
Mumbai witnesses several high-tide events every monsoon season, and authorities closely monitor such periods as they often contribute to traffic disruptions, waterlogging and delays in public transport services when coupled with intense rainfall.
