Elphinstone bridge stampede which claimed 23 lives highlighted the sorry plight of the foot-over bridge (FoB) which is narrow and life-threatening.

This unfortunate accident attracted the attention of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman and union railway minister Piyush Goyal who visited the site and announced that the Army would construct FOB at Elphinstone bridge which began on November 23, 2017.

The Army announced that the bridge will be completed by January 31, 2018, but now it will take additional 15 days to complete. Citing the reasons of technical issues, Goyal said that the bridge will be ready by February 15.

But it seems that the delay in the inauguration of the FOB is not impacting the commuters as they have already started using the Elphinstone bridge. As per railway activists, this can prove dangerous as people have started using the bridge. If at all anything untoward incident occurs, who will be responsible?

Railway officials told Hindustan Times,

The new deadline for the two FOBs is February 15. The Army will require more blocks from both the central and western railways.”

Along with the Elphinstone bridge, a new FOB will be constructed on Currey Road and one at Ambivali Station, which is being said to be completed by January 31, 2017.
