Mumbai’s Metro Line 3 is set to see a major upgrade in end-to-end connectivity as the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd moves with plans to bring new pedestrian subways at the BKC and Science Centre stations. This will give commuters a safe and direct route to main location stations.

The bidding document shows that areas around the Science Centre and BKC have grown rapidly. MMRCL claims that footfall is increasing every day. Separation will remove the need to cross busy roads and reduce surface congestion.

The planned underground corridors will offer smoother, safer and quicker movement to nearby destinations. Together, these new routes will add about 3 km of walkable and pedestrian-friendly access around the two stations.

Three major underground links are part of the plan:

1. One tunnel will run through the Mahalakshmi Racecourse area and will cover around 1.1 km from the Science Centre to the Worli Promenade.

2. Another link from the Science Centre will go towards the Nehru Planetarium. This route will be about 500 metres long and will also pass through the Racecourse zone.

3. The third one at BKC will be a 1.4 km stretch connecting the station to the BKC Rail Terminal through Tata Colony.

The project includes more than just tunnelling. The tender lists several upgrades, such as improved walkways, smoother entry and exit points, landscaped areas, better lighting and cleaned drainage lines. It also includes ventilation and waterproofing to keep the movement safe during the monsoon.

The plan further covers utility shifting, clear wayfinding signs, safety features and architectural finishing. MMRCL notes that public convenience must remain the priority because these works will take place in dense traffic zones.

As per reports, more connections may come in the future. It has planned project papers for direct underground links from both stations to nearby buildings. Once completed, the new pedestrian paths will reduce walking time, avoid traffic conflicts and provide a cleaner and safer daily journey.
