The Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday, March 24, asked his cabinet whether to re-impose the lockdown or tighten the restrictions in the wake of coronavirus cases in the state.

He also urged the need to boost vaccination and strictly enforce COVID-appropriate restrictions. Moreover, a detailed discussion was held in the cabinet meeting on what measures to take to curb the spread of infections.

In various districts of Maharashtra, lockdown, night curfew or restrictions has been implemented. At present, more than 25,000 patients are found daily in the state on an average. If this trend continues, there is no alternative but lockdown, Thackeray clarified. Meanwhile, the ministers suggested that the existing restrictions should be tightened instead of lockdown.

According to reports, cases in Pune, Nagpur, Mumbai, Thane and Nashik contribute 61 per cent of the state’s active cases.

Maharashtra has been strictly following the guidelines issued by the Centre and has been transparent about data. There are some states that have elections and some others that are hosting events with huge crowds there. How are those cases are not increasing in those states? asked Uddhav Thackeray to his ministers.

District administration in Beed and Nanded announced lockdown restrictions from Thursday onwards.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has been rethinking imposing restrictions on the Mumbai locals which happens to be the lifeline of the common man in the city.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope speaking about the same stated, “Citizens should abide by the rules in view of the pandemic. Moreover, face masks and social distancing should be followed. However, if in the next couple of days, citizens are witnessed flouting the rules then tough decisions have to be taken, especially with regards to the Mumbai locals.”

He further added that the decision on lockdown will be taken soon after discussions are held with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

After a gap of nearly 300 days, the general public was allowed to travel in the suburban railway system. However, the trains currently are permitted to ferry the general public in three-time slots: From the time of the start of the services till 7 am, from 12 noon to 4 pm, and from 9 pm till the time of the closure of services for the day.
