Despite a sharp surge in coronavirus cases and the consequent tightening of norms to curb the spread of infection in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is in no mood to order a fresh lockdown or night curfew.

BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, in a recent conversation with Mumbai Mirror said that there is no need for a lockdown and there will be no lockdown as more than 85 per cent of the cases are asymptomatic and the death rate is low.

He also stated that Mumbai may even see 6,000 cases per day. Hence, the civic body has decided on doubling COVID-19 tests from 25,000 to 50,000 a day, including those in malls.

According to reports, at present, 9,000 beds are empty, and in the last 36 days, only 92 patients out of 38,000 went into the ICU. He assured that the situation will soon be controlled and there no need for a night curfew either.

Earlier, IS Chahal had stated that the share of asymptomatic patients has always been 80-85 per cent.

Besides, Mumbai Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh had also stated there is no need for a lockdown, the number of cases can be controlled by imposing stricter restrictions.

On the contrary, Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar on March 18, had warned about the necessity of imposing a night curfew in the current situation to check the virus spread. She also urged all Mumbaikars to work together to prevent the lockdown.
