Even as the coronavirus cases are on the rise, the situation in Mumbai is still under control, says Mumbai Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh. He also stated that a lockdown can be avoided by imposing stricter restrictions for now.

Aslam Sheikh made the statement after his visit to a hospital in Malad on Wednesday, March 17, to review the immunization of senior citizens there.

“The number of coronavirus patients is increasing across the state, including Mumbai. According to Tuesday's statistics, about 2,000 new cases were diagnosed in a day in the city. Yet, I would say that the situation is dire. However, there is a need for strict restrictions to curb the spread of the virus,” said the Aslam Sheikh while talking to the media.

“The situation in Mumbai is not bad as of now. However, by imposing stricter restrictions, we can avoid lockdown. That is why restrictions will be tightened. The immunization program is going in the full-swing across the city. However, there is still some confusion among people. Doctors need to respond appropriately without panic about vaccinations,” said Sheikh, explaining his view on the lockdown.

On March 7, Shaikh had warned Mumbaikars of partial lockdown if the viral spread was not brought under control in eight to 10 days.

Earlier, state health minister Rajesh Tope also stated that lockdown is not the only option that the government has to get the spread under control. He also urged people to COVID-appropriate behaviour at all times and help the government in beating the virus.

Moreover, the BMC additional commissioner Suresh Kakani also favoured the state government and said that lockdown is not a solution to curb the spread of infection. Everyone needs to follow the norms right now, in any particular area or containment zone that have witnessed many more cases there are chances to curb the COVID-19 cases.
