Soon, physically challenged people will be able to apply for disability certificates at civic hospitals. Earlier, only state-run hospitals were authorised to give such certificates but now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) run Cooper hospital will issue the same.
People with disability receive various benefits and schemes from the state and central government but for the same, they have to display the authorised certificate, which was issued only by the state-run hospitals. Also, in Mumbai, the state-run hospitals are few while the number of BMC-run hospitals are more in number.
Following the government directive to municipal corporations, Bal Thackeray Medical College and R.N. Cooper Hospital in Juhu have started the service by setting up a centre on the hospital’s ground floor. Here, certificates will be issued every Wednesday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, free of cost.
Dr. Ganesh Shinde, dean of the hospital and medical college said that as a hospital, they have done several things to make the premises disabled-friendly and they believe that it will help take some load of JJ Hospital.
Applicants have to fill out a form along with submission of necessary documents following which they will be given a date and time to carry out physical tests. Post the tests, people having more than 40 per cent disability will be issued certificates.
