In an attempt to help farmers from exploiting who cultivate grapes and onions, the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana has requested the Centre to bring onions and grapes under the ambit of Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Raju Shetti, President of Sanghatana, said that farmers cultivating onion and grapes are often exploited or are subjected to market manipulation, adding that no mechanism can provide stability to them as the provision of market intervention has not yielded expected results.

He urged the Centre to bring grapes and onions under MSP as it will provide higher remuneration to the farmers and would put a check on exploitation by traders.

Currently, the farmers' leader is touring northern Maharashtra. He also pointed out the regional difference between sugarcane prices stating that in the northern part, the price for sugarcane obtained from farmers is INR 3,100 per tonne. While in western Maharashtra, farmers fetch lower rates.

Meanwhile, a rise in tomato prices is burning a hole in the common man's pocket as its rate crossed INR 100/Kg in Mumbai.
