To enhance transparency in the electoral system, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has cancelled the registration of 334 registered but unrecognised political parties (RUPPs). As of now, there are 6 national parties, 67 regional parties, and 2,854 registered but unrecognised political parties in the country.

Under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, parties are required to provide their name, address, and details of office bearers at the time of registration. The Commission has the authority to cancel the registration of parties that do not contest elections for six consecutive years.

In June 2025, the Commission directed the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of states and union territories to verify 345 RUPPs. During the verification process, notices were issued to the concerned parties, and they were given an opportunity for a personal hearing.

According to the reports submitted by the CEOs, 334 parties failed to meet the necessary requirements. The remaining cases have been sent back for re-verification. As a result, the number of RUPPs in the country has now decreased from 2,854 to 2,520.

These deregistered parties will no longer be entitled to benefits under Sections 29B and 29C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the Income Tax Act, 1961, and the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968. However, they are allowed to appeal against the Commission’s decision within 30 days.
