According to reports, on Tuesday, July 5, evening, Powai Lake in Mumbai began overflowing. This development comes in the midst of heavy rainfall lashing the city over the last few days. 

A civic official was quoted in accounts elaborating on how the lake has a storage capacity of 545 crore litres. Further, it was at 6.15 pm that the lake began overflowing.

This artificial lake is prominently utilized for industrial purposes because it is not fit for human consumption. Moreover, owing to incessant rainfall in the catchment area of the lake in the past few days, the lake began overflowing, voiced Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC's) water engineer department. 

On Tuesday, July 5, heavy rain lashed various parts of Mumbai. This not only impacted vehicular movement because of waterlogging but also caused a wall collapse in Mumbra and a landslide in Ghatkopar

Further, the IMD has given an  "orange alert" till July 9 which depicts "very likely chances of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places" in Mumbai. 

Moreover, 5 NDRF teams have also been deployed in Mumbai since there persists a possibility of flooding in the city. In light of these developments, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed district collectors and officials across the state in view of the weather department's warning of torrential rains in the next few days.
