According to the latest reports, there has not been significant heavy rainfall over the catchment areas that have lakes supplying potable water to Mumbai. Owing to this phenomenon, the aggregate water stocks have gone under 10 per cent of the needed quantum, highlights data from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). 

Based on accounts, the BMC supplies 3,750 million litres of water every day to the city. Presently, the water stock of 9.89 per cent which is 1.43 lakh million litres in the seven water-supplying lakes as of Wednesday, June 22 would suffice the city for 38 days. 

While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) declared the onset of the southwest monsoon in the city on June 11. Since then, there have not been any significant heavy continuous spells, especially over the catchment areas. 

Data from the civic body reportedly brings to light that smaller Tulsi recorded 250mm and Vihar recorded 231 mm of rainfall respectively, since June 11. Similarly, Tansa, Modak Sagar, Bhatsa, Middle Vaitarna and Upper Vaitarna received 113 mm, 92 mm, 83 mm, 65 mm and 40 mm of rainfall since the onset of the monsoon respectively. 

Of the seven lakes, the foremost percentage of water is supplied by Bhatsa at 48 per cent, followed by Tulsi and Vihar at 2 per cent of Mumbai's drinking water needs. Likewise, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitrana, Modal Sagar and Tansa add to 16 per cent, 12 per cent, 11 per cent and 10 per cent consequently. 

Narratives claim that officials from the civic body are hopeful that rain activity will pick up in the coming days in the catchment areas.
