On May 9, 42 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) engineers had protested by going on a mass leave to condemn the arrest of retired Chief Engineer Shitlaprada O Kori, who was among the four arrested in the Himalaya Bridge collapse incident at CSMT. The engineer union believed that the authorities shouldn't arrest anyone until the actual reason for the collapse is known.

However, the engineers have cancelled their protest after their recent meeting with new BMC Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi.

Sainath Rajadhyaksha, president of Brihanmumbai Municipal Engineers Union said that they met the new BMC commissioner with three main demands - 50 engineers should be sent to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay for 15 days training. The vacancies of engineers should be filled and henceforth no one should be arrested without concrete evidence. The protest was stopped only after the commissioner accepted their demands.

The protest had affected the construction and repair work of all the bridges in Mumbai which is in full swing. The engineers had met the former Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta at Shirodkar school in Parel to express their discontent.
