Four members of a family were hurt when a tree fell on them in Dadar. The accident occurred around 9:35 PM near Shivaji Park police station on Saturday.

Among the casualties are Achuthan Raut, his wife, Jyoti, their daughter, Adishree and niece Shreya. While Raut, his wife and daughter were discharged from the hospital early on Sunday, Shreya incurred spine injuries and had to undergo a surgery.
As per Raut, who lives in Shivaji Park, the family was on its way to Plaza Cinema to watch a movie when it started raining a little. They took shelter near a temple for a while. After the rain stopped, they started walking and the tree fell on them. Workers from a nearby construction site and residents of the area took the injured to Dhanwantari Hospital.

At around 10:00 PM, Shreya’s father Bharat Raut got a call and he rushed to the hospital. He later decided to shift them to Hinduja Hospital.

Bharat told that Shreya was paralyzed from the waist down. She regained consciousness in her lower body on Sunday. The doctors performed a CT scan on her and said that she would need a surgery to treat the injuries to the spine.

Ashok Khairnar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, G (North) Ward, said an audit of all the trees in the ward was already carried out. The tree that fell down on Saturday seemed healthy from the outside and there were no signs of rot. When civic staff began cutting the tree to clear the road, they discovered that the trunk was hollow. The tree is said to have been at least 60 years old.

The commissioner further told that all trees in the ward will be inspected to identify similar cases so that any untoward incident like this can be avoided.
