In an attempt to meet up with the shortage of beds for COVID-19 patients and high-risk contacts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has readied 7,000 cardboard beds. Of the 7,000 beds, the BMC has already sent 5,000 cardboard beds to isolation/quarantine facilities across the city.

The beds have been made by a paper manufacturing company in Vapi called Aryan Paper Group. The company has already donated up to 1,000 beds to BMC as well as several other hospitals in Gujarat.

Param Gandhi, executive director of the company told TOI that they had prepared the prototype in a week and had manufactured the beds at their Vapi unit. He also said that the beds can be used for up to six months and can be recycled thereafter.

The cardboard beds are easy to assemble and can be folded to save space. In order to make it water-resistant, the bed has been covered with chemical substances.

The beds are currently being used at quarantine/isolation centres at Police Gymkhana, Catholic Gymkhana, Mumbai University's Kalina Campus, a school, and college in Dharavi. According to Gandhi, the intention to make the beds is not to earn profit but to keep the company working amid the pandemic. He also added that the cardboard beds cost less than the traditional metal beds which cost up to Rs. 3,800 per bed.

Anticipating the rise, in the number of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, the BMC along with other agencies in the city has been making necessary arrangements to increase the number of beds for the coronavirus patients. For instance, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had constructed a 1000-bed isolation/quarantine facility at the Bandra-Kurla Complex ground which began functioning May 16 onwards.
