In an initiative of the State and The Central Government, Maharashtra State Commission for Women will be conducting training programs for developing the Mumbai city into a smart as well a gender safe one. The President of Maharashtra Rajya Mahila Aayog (Maharashtra State Commission for Women), Vijaya Rahatkar said that the programs will be carried out with the assistance of the governing civic body of Mumbai, BMC.

Surveys have been conducted under the auspices of Akshara NGO in collaboration with UN Women, Safety Pin and Uber India. Mumbai's 'safety audit' was presented in presence of Vijaya Rahatkar.

Smart City should have gender equality and safety. In addition to providing facilities to the citizens of the city, the corporation should consider the safe footpaths, public cleanliness, efficient CCTV machinery, women police stations, women's driver carrier buses, accommodation for single women etc. Municipal Corporation should create a mechanism to ensure that the city, including electricity, water and roads should be secure and equitable.
Vijaya Rahatkar said that Maharashtra Rajya Mahila Aayog will be implementing this program with the corporation.

Mumbai is sure in a quest to become a smart city but looking at the alarmingly rising rate of crime against women leads us to the question the safety of women in the city. A smart city is such a city where no female lives under any oppression and fear. Hence, Mumbai Safety Audit is the need of the hour
