In a significant development, the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday, November 4, restrained the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from taking any action against the members of Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association (FRTWA) till December 18 for failing to put up signboards in Marathi outside their shops and establishments.

A division bench of Justices KM Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy asked the civic body and the Maharashtra government to file its replies by the next date of hearing.

The SC made these statements while hearing a special leave petition filed by FRTWA challenging the decision of the Maharashtra government mandating all shops and establishments to display their names in Marathi (Devanagiri).

It is pertinent to note that the association moved SC after receiving a setback from the Bombay High Court (HC) on February 23 as it rejected their petition which challenged Maharashtra government's decision mandating all shops and establishments in the state to display signboards in Marathi.

After extending deadlines four times, BMC finally began its initiative to crackdown the shops and its owners without Marathi signboard from October 10.

In this regards, the civic body has issued notices to 522 shops and establishments for violating provisions of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017.
