The surge in the number of coronavirus cases in the suburbs of Mumbai has led to the sealing of 1,000 buildings in the past eight days. According to data shared by the civic body, the city has sealed 5,951 buildings/floors compared to 4,859 on June 16.

At the moment, the maximum number of COVID-19 cases can be found in K-East Ward (Andheri East and Ville Parle) at 644, followed by R-Central (Borivli) at 589, P-North (Malad) at 471 and T-ward which has the fewest patients at 454.

BMC officials have stated that aggressive and stringent methods have been used to make sure screening is conducted effectively along with the sanitization of these slum pockets as COVID-19 cases tend to thrive in cramped up spaces. This has led to a dip in the number of cases being reported in the slums in recent times.

The BMC earlier on Monday had sealed an entire building nestled on the Nepean Sea Road after 21 cases of coronavirus were reported from the society in the last one week. The D Ward of the civic body spreads across neighbourhoods like Malabar Hill, Gamdevi and Nepean Sea Road. According to the data shared by the BMC, it shows that in June, most of the new cases of COVID-19 in the ward were reported from residential complexes and high-rises.

The BMC further speaking about the decision to seal high rise buildings have stated that the decision is usually taken on after measuring in a couple of factors. Like the spaces where a COVID-19 positive case is found. If a case is found in the slums it is usually sealed off completely as people in the slums live in small spaces, furthermore, use community toilets which increases the chance for the disease to spread rapidly. In buildings, if a positive case is found in an apartment usually the floor is sealed off to safeguard the residents.
