Owing to lack of parking space, many times, people park their cars and bikes on the roads. But, henceforth, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will not entertain this and will tow the vehicle. And if the owner does not retrieve the vehicle in a month’s time, then the civic body will auction the vehicle.

BMC will bring in new towing vans to take action against abandoned vehicles. This will increase the number of vans from six to ten and each vehicle will be stationed in seven zones across the city.

BMC will send prior notice before taking action

Under section 314 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1884, the BMC seizes abandoned vehicles. Before towing it, it gives the owner 48 hours to remove the vehicle. If the owner fails to do so, the vehicle is then sent to the scrapyard. The list of such vehicles is then sent to the local and traffic police which is then forwarded to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

Again the owner gets three months to claim the vehicle, if he does not do that, the BMC then auction the vehicle under section 490 (3) of the Act. If at all, the owner shows up then he has to pay the penalty.

If nobody claims the vehicle even after three months, the BMC auctions the vehicle under Section 490 (3) of the Act. If owners come forward, they have to pay a penalty.”

Nidhi Chowdhary, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Removal of Encroachment).

File complaints about abandoned vehicles

People can register their complaints either by writing to the BMC’s authorities concerned or can call on 1916 helpline number. Along with this, one can file their complaint on www.mcgm.gov.in and portal.mcgm.gov.in
