Maharashtra reduces syllabus for class 1-12 by 25 per cent amidst COVID-19

In the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, to reduce the burden on the students, the Maharashtra government on July 25 announced the reduction in the syllabus for classes I to XII by 25 per cent for the 2020-21 academic session. The move follows similar announcements made by the CBSE, ICSE and a few other state boards.

Even though the schools had earlier started online education, several students have been facing difficulties as a result of it. Many students do not have internet connection as they live in remote areas. The teachers have also asserted to facing difficulties in finishing the entire syllabus in view of the pandemic. As a result, a total of 101 chapters, 22 in primary (classes I to IV), 20 in secondary (classes V to X), and 59 in higher secondary (classes XI and XII) have been omitted across all subjects.

Varsha Gaikwad, the school education minister further informed of this, against the backdrop of the pandemic, the proposal submitted by the Maharashtra State Council for Educational Research and Training to reduce the syllabus for Classes 1 to 12 for the academic year 2020-21 has been approved by the government. Meanwhile, in order to check the revised syllabus, the website of MSCERT can be checked to reaffirm.

In the past, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) had also announced a reduction of up to 25 per cent in the syllabus for classes X and XII. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), too, announced a 30 per cent reduction in the syllabus for classes IX to XII on July 7 amidst COVID-19.
