With the onset of heavy rainfall in Maharashtra, the crops have been hit hard in the state creating a huge margin between the wholesale price before the monsoons and the current wholesale price.

Moreover, ever since the pandemic, the prices of vegetables have witnessed an increase as well. However, before last week’s downpour, the wholesale market price of green gram, papdi, cauliflower, guar and capsicum was ₹80 per kg but as a result of the decline in goods, these rates have increased to ₹120, ₹100, ₹100, ₹120, ₹100 per kg respectively.

The vegetable sellers could earlier buy cabbage and carrots at ₹50 per kg. These rates have increased by ₹30 and ₹20, respectively. Tomatoes have gone up from ₹30 to ₹40, okra from ₹60 to ₹80 and brinjal from ₹40 to ₹70 per kg. Chilli, which is available at a wholesale price of  ₹ 64 per kg, is now being sold at ₹80 per kg.

Moreover, the prices of onions have also gone up with them being priced at ₹100 per kg, while potatoes are being priced at ₹50 to ₹55 per kg. The loss of agricultural produce due to the rains has reduced the inflow of goods into the market. As a consequence, the vegetable prices have gone up by 30 to 40 per cent.
