Hardik Pandya in, Rohit Sharma rested for South Africa series

On Sunday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. The ODIs against the Proteas will be played between March 12 and 18, 2020.

As usual, skipper Kohli will lead the 15-member ODI side for the series. The recently-selected Sunil Joshi-led five-member selection panel recalled fit-again India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, along with opener Shikhar Dhawan and pacer Bhubaneswar Kumar. This is the selection panel's first task since appointment.

On the other hand, vice-captain Rohit Sharma will continue to rest as it seems he is still not ready for playing competitive cricket. Sharma had picked up a calf injury during a T20I series in New Zealand earlier this year. After which, he missed the subsequent ODI and the Test series.

It is expected that the explosive opener will be back during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020,  which commences March 29 onwards. The new selection committee consisting of Joshi and Harvinder Singh was recently formed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).

Pandya had undergone back surgery in October 2019 and since then, he hasn't played international cricket. But in the ongoing DY Patil T20 tournament, Pandya displayed his fitness and even went on registering scores of 46, 105, 38 and 158*.

Along with Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan as well featured in the DY Patil T20 Tournament for Reliance 1 team.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami has been rested for the three matches and Jasprit Bumrah has been picked instead. Medium-pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been recalled for the first time since the West Indies series in December 2019.

India squad: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Virat Kohli (C), KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini, Kuldeep Yadav, Shubman Gill.
