In their first Test match, Afghanistan lost by 262 runs and an innings after Indian bowlers dominated the visitors and scalped all 20 wickets on day 2. India began from 347-6 on day 2, after which Hardik Pandya scored a 50 but lost his wicket after scoring 71 off 94 balls. A quick 26 off 21 by Umesh Yadav powered India to 474.
After Afghanistan openers came out to bat, they were both sent back to the pavilion as they lost their wickets quickly, leaving the team in shambles. As Umesh Yadav picked the wicket of Rahmat Shah, he reached the milestone of 100 Test wickets. What followed later was a house of cards that shambled as the spin duo of Ashwin-Jadeja picked up six wickets together.
Afghanistan were bowled out for 109 runs and were invited for follow-on in which the Afghan boys fell short of 262 runs and faced defeat. The bowlers bowled a better length in the innings and bowled Afghanistan out for 103 runs. Jadeja got four wickets whereas Umesh Yadav scalped three wickets in the second innings. Shikhar Dhawan was declared the ‘Player of the Match’.
Cricket expert Harsha Bhogle reacted on Twitter after the match:
Harsh welcome for Afghanistan to test cricket and the realisation that this form of cricket requires very different skills.
