Virat Kohli marked his 200th ODI with a century but Tom Latham and Ross Taylor spoiled his party as New Zealand beat India by 6 wickets in the first ODI on Sunday, October 22 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

India mounted 280/8 batting first as captain Kohli scored a remarkable 121 in 125 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes. The men in blue won the toss and elected to bat first but pacers Trent Boult and Tim Southee started the match really well with Boult getting both the openers. Rohit Sharma went for 20 whereas Shikhar Dhawan for 9.

The middle order tried to put up a fight but had it not been for Kohli’s century, India wouldn’t come anywhere close to 280.

Boult finished his 10 overs with 4 for 35, and on the other hand Southee finished on the expensive side he conceded 73 in his 10 overs with 3 wickets.

The Kiwis lost Martin Guptill (32) after a strong start, with captain Kane Williamson (6) and Colin Munro (28) dismissed in no time.

It was Latham and Taylor’s partnership which guided the Kiwis to victory as they put together a 200–run fourth wicket partnership. There wasn’t big hitting involved but running between the wickets was on point for these two.

Guptill and Munro started their innings very well but Bumrah and Pandya struck to get the opening pair out. Kiwis captain Kane Williamson lost his wicket early to Yadav but then started the partnership which ended India’s hopes of winning.

Taylor’s 95 in 100 and Latham’s 103* in 102 guided New Zealand to a 6 wicket win in the first match of the three-match series.
Tom Latham was declared ‘Man of the match’ for his brilliant knock which overshadowed Kohli’s 31st ODI century.

Next match will be played in Pune on Wednesday, October 25, 2017.
