Ever since its inception, Mumbai Indians have emerged as one of the most successful franchises in T20 cricket league scenario. The team was acquired by Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries Ltd in 2008 and there has been no looking back.

Mumbai Indians’ Trophy Chase
After missing out on titles on many occasions in closely-contested finals, MI finally laid hands on the trophy in 2011 when they lifted the now defunct Champions League T20 tournament. Mumbai Indians then went on to win the first IPL trophy in 2013 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. That year, they also clinched their second CLT20 trophy.
Mumbai Indians have the joint-most number of IPL titles, which they share with Chennai Super Kings. After winning their maiden IPL crown in 2013, they went on to win the 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 editions as well.
Having tasted enormous success in India, the owners of Mumbai Indians, started the expansion of the MI franchise by acquiring teams in the franchise leagues in UAE - ILT20 and South Africa - SA20.
In 2022, MI founded the MI Emirates (based in Abu Dhabi) and the MI Cape Town (based in Cape Town) teams, which compete in the ILT20 and SA20 leagues respectively.
In 2023, the MI franchise made their entry into the newly launched Women's Premier League (WPL) and the Major League Cricket (MLC).
The Mumbai side won the inaugural editions of the WPL in 2023 as Mumbai Indians, and MLC as MI New York.
However, the MI franchise had to wait a little longer for titles in the ILT20 and the SA20 leagues. MI claimed their first ILT20 trophy in 2024 as MI Emirates, and completed their trophy cabinet with the SA20 title in 2025 as MI Cape Town.
Very recently, the owners of MI have now made a foray in the England and Wales Cricket Board's The Hundred competition by buying 49 percent stake in the Oval Invincibles. They are two-time champions already. MI will hope to add The Hundred to their cabinet soon.
