When was the last time you saw a southpaw smashing sixes all across the stadium? Most of you will remember Yuvraj Singh’s feat in 2007 against England. Last night, Eden Gardens witnessed another southpaw, Ishan Kishan hitting sixes all-around the stadium. Just so you know: he was at the crease from overs 9 to 14.4 which and in just 34 balls, he just faced 21 of those. In those 21 balls, Kishan smashed 62 runs which consisted of six sixes and five fours.

Kishan reached his 50 in just 17 balls, the joint-fastest by a Mumbai Indians batsman. Pollard had done the same in the 2016 season. Kishan was so dominant that 56 out of his 62 runs came in boundaries! He formed an 82-run partnership with skipper, Rohit Sharma and Sharma’s contribution in it was just 18 runs.

At the post-match press conference, Kishan credited Captain Rohit Sharma and the team management for backing him. He also expressed his thanks to MS Dhoni who happens to be his Jharkhand teammate, for helping him be a better player.

I think he (Dhoni) helps me a lot. Whenever I meet him, I get a lot of tips from him. As you know he’s a legend. He just tells me to take my time and read the situation before deciding how you I go about it. So that’s the part where I feel confident when he tells me, ‘just back yourself, be yourself and do the same things’,” Kishan said.

He said that during the timeout, he was told by his coach to just be himself and stay positive. He also mentioned that Sharma told him to stay focused and look at the ball. Kishan believed in himself and hit the second-fastest fifty of the season.

So far, Kishan has hit 238 runs in 10 innings this season. He is also MI’s joint-highest six-hitter with Evin Lewis. Mumbai Indians next play Rajasthan Royals on May 13 at Wankhede Stadium.
