In yet another shaky incident potholes have claimed a couple's life recently. Mumbai has been dealing with these never ending potholes issue since decades now.

However, it seems that these alarming number of deaths and mishaps are not enough to awaken the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to solve this problem. Many promises have been made, albeit, they remain only on papers.

Besides, weeks ago, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) invited tenders worth nearly INR 5,800 crores for the improvement of roads. In these tenders, nearly 400 km of roads will be concertized. Through this, the BMC hopes to solve the problem of potholes in Mumbai in the coming two years.

According to reports, a couple on Thursday, August 17, while commuting from Bandra on a motorcycle died after they encountered potholes near Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali on Western Express Highway (WEH) enrooting Naigaon.

The incident took place around 1.26 pm when the two – Nazir Shah, 43, and his wife Chaya Khilare, 43 – were going for a TV shoot in Naigaon. Their bike was moving along the northbound stretch of the WEH when the accident took place, said police sources.

The victims fell off the bike when they were run over by a truck. The couple was immediately taken to the Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali where they were declared dead on arrival.

On the flyover next to SGNP, Shah lost control of his bike while negotiating potholes. This made the couple fall on the road. At that time, a speeding truck came from behind and as the driver could not apply the break in time, the vehicle ran over the couple. Both were wearing helmets but the truck went over their bodies, reports by police official stated.

The truck driver has been identified as Salim Shaikh, 37, and he has been arrested under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

Shaikh claimed that the couple had already fallen on the road and he could not stop the truck in time and ran over them.

While Shah worked in the creative field in the film industry, his wife was a make-up artist. The couple earlier used to stay in Mira Road but moved to Andheri near the residence of Shah’s mother so that she can look after their son when they go to work.

The couple got married seven years ago and are survived by their six-year-old son.
