Only 31 cases out of 154 registered cases of burglary in Mumbai have been detected

While more than 6,000 CCTVs have been installed throughout the city by the Police Administration to prevent the growing crime in the city, burglaries and thefts have not stopped.

There has been an increase in burglaries in Mumbai this year. According to a report, 154 cases of burglary were reported in June but only 31 cases of burglary were detected. While there was a common factor in most of the cases as most of them occurred during the summer when people are out on a summer break.

According to statistics, a total of 1,086 cases of burglary were registered in the last six months, out of which the police were only successful in detecting 426 cases i.e. only 39.22 per cent cases were detected by the police. In 2017, 2,409 thefts were registered and 1,045 incidents were detected by the police. Whereas in 2016,  2,552 thefts were reported and only 1,171 cases were detected by the police.

RTI activist Shakeel Ahmed exclaimed that the figures were shocking and he said,

In the last five years, valuables worth ₹200 crores have been stolen which consisted of jewellery, valuables and cash. Looking at the speed of the action of the police, items worth only ₹49 lakh have been recovered, i.e. only 17 per cent of the stolen property was recovered.”
