On Monday, December 6, the Supreme Court stated that former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh can’t be arrested in criminal cases filed against him, stated reports. It told the department that it can continue to investigate the allegations against him.

However, it added that can’t file any chargesheet against Singh over the allegations of misconduct as well as corruption. The matter has now been listed for hearing on January 11, 2022. Meanwhile, it asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file its affidavit on Singh’s plea.

Singh is facing allegations of operating an extortion racket alongside Sachin Vaze, the dismissed police inspector. The crime branch has alleged that they were extorting hoteliers, as well as bar owners in Mumbai.

After writing to chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, about former home minister Anil Deshmukh asking crime branch officials to gather INR 100 crore every month, Singh absconded. The former Mumbai police commissioner was removed from his post after explosives were found near Antilia.

Singh appeared in a Mumbai court after disappearing for over six months to help with the investigation after the Supreme Court’s order granted him interim protection from arrest.

Last week, the Maharashtra government removed him from his position as the Director-General of Maharashtra Home Guard citing dereliction of duty. Based on narratives, there are five FIRs registered against Singh.
