Maharashtra to soon have a state song; decision to be announced by November

As per reports, the government is planning to finalise ‘Jai Jai Maharashtra Mazha’ as the official song of the state as it talks about history and culture of Maharashtra and evokes a sense of pride.

The Government of Maharashtra, in a recently released update, shared that the state may soon become a part of the list of Indian states to have its own state song. As per reports, officials from the government are planning to finalise ‘Jai Jai Maharashtra Mazha’ as the official song of the state. Authorities have informed that the song is rousing in nature and once confirmed by the leaders, it will be played at all the government-related ceremonial events.

A report regarding the same was published in the Hindustan Times, which quoted Maharashtra's Cultural Affaird Minister, Sudhir Mungantiwar, who said that the team was working on deciding the song from the list presented to them. The song is selected on aspects that celebrate and praise the state of Maharashtra. Besides this, songs that talk about the history and culture of the state is also being noted. Final decision regarding the same will be taken post a meeting which will be held soon. Quoting the leader, the publication shared, “We may select ‘Jai Jai Maharashtra Mazha’ as the official state song…. Only 11 states in the country have a song of their own.” 

Jai Jai Maharashtra Mazha has been written by the poet Raja Badhe, and is also known as Maharashtra Geet. The song was sung by Krishnarao Sable fondly known as Shahir, and 2022 marks his centenary year, as of September 3, 2022. The song has been composed by Shrinivas Khale and is currently sung at several events unofficially. Leaders and literature enthusiasts in Maharashtra recognise this song with Shahir Sable, who passed away in 2015. 

The report also quoted a official from the directorate of culture, who said, “Apart from ‘Jai Jai Maharashtra Mazha’, the other compositions in the zone of consideration include ‘Bahu Asot Sundar Sampanna Ki Maha,’ (by poet Shripad Krishna Kolhatkar), and Mangal Desha, Pavitra Desha (by Govindagraj)." 

The government aims to kindle a sense of  pride in the people of Maharashtra and hope that the song shares a strong message about state's history and culture. Besides, Maharashtra, state like Karnataka and Uttarakhand also have state songs, and have been retained despite the length.
