On Tuesday, March 8, Maharashtra school education minister Varsha Gaikwad told the legislative council that nearly 12,000 students or 37 per cent of the aggregate grade one, students haven’t been able to attain reading or writing skills owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, reports stated.
The statement was made in response to a question raised by MLC Dr Sudhir Tambe. The minister had remarked that the results were from a survey done covering 1,47,277 students from grades one to five.
Gaikwad was quoted by accounts elaborating on how the number of grade one students stood at 32,888. Adding that the survey brought to light that 12,300 students which are 37 per cent weren’t able to attain the minimum abilities to read and write.
According to the school education minister, this is the foremost percentage of students not being able to attain the requisite skills amongst all grades. The minister informed the council that the total percentage of pupils who weren’t able to attain the reading and writing skills stood at 14.7 per cent.
This, she said, will be addressed with the online and offline training sessions done by the teachers. Upon the completion of the training, a fresh survey will be conducted to comprehend how beneficial the scheme was.
