The education department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said that it will conduct visits to schools situated within their jurisdictions so as to monitor their functioning while also making sure that students at civic schools are getting access to the best education.

The civic body posted a circular on November 4 explaining its move. “Several guidelines of the state government and BMC have mandated teachers to ensure that all students get access to learning. Similarly, students who do not have internet and are thus unable to attend online classes, have to be taught offline by going to their localities,” it read.

The Maharashtra Education Department has announced 50 per cent attendance for teachers and non-teaching staff. With this in mind, teachers have been asked to finish their curriculum and also conduct examinations from schools.

Some teachers, however, are sceptical about this proposal. “The civic body needs to trust us rather than just inspecting each and everything time and again. Our teachers are struggling to reach schools with the travel restrictions but are still doing their best to ensure learning,” a teacher from a BMC school said.

It’s worth noting that the State Education Ministry recently extended the Diwali vacations for its teachers and students after receiving widespread criticism for initially offering reduced vacation days.
