On Wednesday, August 26, the Congress announced its plan to hold countrywide protests on Friday, August 28 in order to oppose the decision of the government to hold NEET and JEE examinations in view of the pandemic.

AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, in a statement, further said that the move is in line with concerted opposition to this "dictatorial move" of the government. Moreover, Congress is touted to hold these protests in front of the Central government offices at state and district levels.

The NEET examination is planned to take place on September 13 whereas the JEE Main is scheduled from September 1-6. Around 9.53 lakh candidates have registered for JEE-Mains, meanwhile, 15.97 lakh students have registered for NEET. These examinations had earlier been postponed twice in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

However, many political leaders have joined the bandwagon of protests and have demanded the postponement of the examinations. Amidst the pandemic, along with the monsoons and the subsequent floods, several leaders like Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, and even Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy had appealed to the Centre with the demands of students. Swamy had earlier written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to postpone NEET/JEE and other competitive examinations till Diwali at least.

On the other hand, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has listed certain guidelines that should be followed in order to safely conduct medical and engineering entrance examinations NEET and JEE in the month of September.
