The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made an important announcement regarding the curriculum for students for the academic year 2020-2021. CBSE has decided to cut syllabus by 30 per cent for the school-going students of 9th to 12th.

Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal informed ANI in this regard. Pokhriyal further stressed on the importance of learning stating that the decision has been made to reduce the syllabus keeping the basic concept intact. This decision has been taken on the basis of suggestions from various school management, parents, state, academics and teachers. The course has been prepared by a committee of experts from NCERT and the CBSE Board. The Committee has taken this decision in an effort to keep away from repetitive topics and subject matter that has been covered in other chapters.

Furthermore, the decision has been made keeping in mind the loss of time as a consequence of the coronavirus outbreak and the consecutive lockdown.

On June 6, Manish Sisodia, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, had pitched for a 30 per cent reduction in the syllabus for all grades to make up for the loss caused because of the outbreak of the coronavirus. He also advocated resumption of educational institutes with practical guidelines. In a letter written to HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, Sisodia stated that since people need to learn to live with coronavirus now, it would be better if the already existing learning spaces like educational institutes, take up that role. He also added that online teaching can complement learning and not replace it. Therefore, it cannot be a long term solution.

As soon as the coronavirus hit the country, a nationwide lockdown was announced on March 24 and it came into effect on March 25. The schools and colleges continue to remain closed amidst the pandemic to contain the spread of the contagious disease.
