For the last several years, the world has been developing through digital advances. The college students have used the digital medium to connect with one another through social media platforms. However, Government Law College (GLC) recently asked its students to shut down an Instagram page by issuing a notice. After which, the students have expressed their displeasure towards the college authorities.

The GLC students had created a confession page on Instagram, which is a page that consists of several stories of the college students regarding their love interests, pranks during college, secrets etc. However, the page was named, ‘GLC Mumbai Confession Page’ due to which, the college authorities were irked by the casual mention of the college on Instagram.

On November 19, Monday, college principal Suvarna Kevale issued a notice in the college asking the students to shut down the Instagram page. The principal stated that the admin must bring the page down asap or else they will face legal action. Alongside, the students were also warned that no further pages with the name of college must be made on social media i.e. Facebook, Instagram etc.

The notice further explained that the students will have to seek permission from the college to use their name and if they fail to do so, they would face legal action. Looking at which, several students at the Law college have started deleting the pages on social media.

Meanwhile, Student Law Council President, Sachin Pawar said,

The Constitution of India allows all Indians to access their Right to Freedom of Expression and Speech. Therefore, the GLC authorities cannot curb the students’ voices and their rights. The notice to ask the students to delete the Instagram page shows the autocratic behavior from college which is condemnable. Therefore, it is clear that the college is trying to divide the students through such outrageous notices.”
