Jails in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are now searching for an alternative arrangement to quarantine inmates. They were initially using municipal schools to quarantine inmates since the COVID-19 pandemic has begun. However, authorities have now asked to surrender the municipal schools.

The schools across the state have resumed their physical classes since October 4. Rajiv Nivatkar, Mumbai City collector, has directed the officials of Arthur Road Jail and Byculla Jail to surrender the municipal schools. The schools are located at Byculla S Bridge and Patanwala School.

Likewise, the authorities at  Kalyan Jail are asked to surrender Don Bosco School by Rajesh Narvekar, who is a Thane collector.

While confirming the same, Mumbai city collector, Nivatkar has said that now since the schools are starting, they have to give the municipal school premises back to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). He has asked the civic body to provide them with an alternate space.

Last week it was reported that until Wednesday, 20-25 municipal schools are yet to restart their physical classes since they still have either vaccination or quarantine centres on the premises. On Wednesday, October 13, Uday Samant had announced that all the colleges in Maharashtra will re-open from October 20 Wednesday.
