The Maharashtra government on Friday asked the universities to submit a detailed plan to conduct the final year examination by Monday, September 7. The state government also intends to bring out the results by October end to save the academic year.

Although the universities were free to conduct exams as per their schedule, Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant said that they will have to announce the results by October end. Samant also informed that the Governor has given permission to final year students to appear for exams online.

The minister said that the government was trying to conduct the final year exams online so that students can avoid visiting college amid coronavirus outbreak. Samant also said that the examination will be made easy for the students.

Earlier, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has directed all universities in the state to complete the examination process by October 31. The decision to provide extension was taken in a meeting regarding the final examination.

In the meeting held via video conferencing, Governor Koshyari, in his capacity as chancellor of universities asked the universities to start the practical examinations from September 15. This comes after the Supreme Court announced that exams should be conducted.

Minister of Higher and Technical Education Uday Samant, Minister of State (MoS) Prajakt Tanpure, Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors on Examination Dr Suhas Pednekar and Additional Chief Secretary, Higher and Technical Education Rajiv Jalota was present at Raj Bhavan.

“The Vice Chancellors were asked to consider conducting examinations using the best possible mechanism including MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) / OMR Optical Mark Recognition method and to think of conducting Offline examinations only in exceptional cases,” the statement released by Raj Bhavan read.

Considering the shortage of time available for setting Question Papers, the Governor asked universities to coordinate with Savitribai Phule Pune University and the University of Mumbai and other universities for preparing question Banks.

Earlier, on the instructions of the Governor, vice-chancellors of all non-agricultural universities apprised the Governor of the preparedness made by their universities to conduct examinations and declare results within the stipulated time.

The Supreme Court recently upheld the UGC guidelines and announced that the students in the final year can’t be promoted without taking examinations. It clearly said that no state and university can promote students without conducting exams.
