There are reports claiming that class10th board examination has been cancelled due to the surge in coronavirus cases in the state. However, Maharashtra school education minister Varsha Gaikwad on Friday, February 26, confirmed that the board examinations of class 10th and 12th will be held in the state.

In schools where coronavirus cases have been found, local authorities have been directed to ensure that necessary hygiene and disinfection measures are taken, the minister said.

Considering the rise in cases in some districts, the local administration has been asked to close schools for some time from March 1 if they feel that is necessary, Gaikwad said.

On the other hand, the Maharashtra School Education Minister recently ordered an inquiry into the schools that arbitrarily solicited fees during school closure or expelled students amidst the outbreak of the coronavirus.

A few days ago, a total of 190 positive cases emerged from a school hostel in the Washim district of the state. The lot comprises of 186 students and four teachers. Apart from the hostel in the Washim district, a student hostel in the Latur district also has recorded as many as 39 students and five staff members positive for COVID-19.

Moreover, for the last few months, parents have been protesting for the reduction of school fees on account of financial constraints and economic loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, on February 17, around 300 parents of the students studying in private unaided schools of Maharashtra staged a protest at Azad Maidan over fees charged during the pandemic.

Maharashtra has been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The cases in the state have been on a rise since the second week of February. Several districts have announced stringent lockdowns and curfews to prevent the virus surge. Satara, Nagpur, Pune, Jalna, Latur have imposed restrictions. Amravati earlier announced a week-long lockdown earlier.

Moreover, Uddhav Thackeray had also said that a decision on another lockdown would be taken on the basis of public behaviour in the next few days.
