Last week, the Maharashtra government gave a nod to reopen schools for grades 1-7 in urban Maharashtra and grades 1-4 in rural areas from Wednesday, December 1. The decision to open schools was taken during the cabinet meeting that Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray attended virtually from the hospital.

Now, a group of parents from Mumbai has appealed the state government to reopen pre-primary and kindergarten schools. They have written a letter to Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray urging him to resume pre-primary schools. They also thanked him for opening in-person classes for Classes 1 to 7.

In the letter, they have written that their smallest children are in their most formative years. Not being in school has caused distress as their learning is all sensory through touch, feel, play and experience. They are unable to learn anything on the screen.

In the letter addressed to Thackeray, it states that 10,000 parents/citizens are in favor of reopening schools of all the classes. The parents have also started a campaign 'Open Mumbai Schools Now.' Parents feel that their children are safer in school than in crowded play areas, movie theatres, etc.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also supported the decision to open schools from grades 1-7 in Mumbai, and the SOPs for re-opening the school will be updated soon
