Pune's National Film and Television Institute (FTII) has won the best short film at the globally prestigious Cannes Film Festival. A short film 'Sunflower Were First Once To Know' by Chidanand Naik, a student of the institute, has won the first prize in the competitive section of 'Le Cinef'.


This year, the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival was held from May 15 to 24. 'Le Cinéf' is the official competitive section of the festival to encourage students from film training institutions around the world. This year, 18 short films from around the world were selected in this section. Among them were four animated films and 14 live action short films. 'Sunflower Were First Ones To Know', a short film directed by Chidanand Naik, a student of the Department of Television at FTII, was the only Indian short film in the category. The results of the competition were announced on Thursday. It was announced that the short film 'Sunflower Were First Once To Know' was the best.

Head of Television Department Dr. Milind Damle said that it is special for the first time that a short film of a one-year student of the Television Department has been selected at the Cannes Film Festival and won the first prize. In this one-year course, students are taught about the media of film and television in a disciplined manner. This is certainly a matter of pride for FTII for the short film.
