On Wednesday, July 14, the Bombay High Court approved the use of A4 size papers printed on both sides for filing pleas and internal communications at all levels.

This decision has been taken in order to save paper and free up storage space. Meanwhile, the court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by lawyer Ajinkya Udane. Udane stated in the petition that using A4 size paper for all judicial and administrative work would save paper, result in the axing of fewer trees and free up storage space in the court.

According to reports, the bench stated, “Considering the difficulties being faced by the members of the Bar or parties-in-person with regard to the use of A4 size paper and with a view to bringing uniformity about use of paper in day-to-day working on the administrative side, to minimize consumption of paper and consequently to save the Environment, Hon’ble the Chief Justice and the Judges of the Bombay High Court has been pleased to direct that henceforth, the Registry shall use A4 size paper (on both sides) for internal communications at all levels in the Registry,"

On the other hand, a group of lawyers recently filed public interest litigations with the Bombay High Court (HC) requesting access to local trains. Hearing these petitions, a bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni said that although they empathize with the troubles faced by lawyers in Mumbai, they cannot go against medical advice.

Subsequently, the bench has asked the Maharashtra Government to inform the court by July 16 if 60 registered judicial clerks of the High Court can be permitted to use trains as the HC was only permitting the physical filing of cases.
