The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data reveals that the collective water stock levels in the seven lakes has finally surged 60 per cent as on 6 am today, July 24.

The torrential rain in Mumbai and other districts of Maharashtra in the last few days has led to an increase in water levels in Mumbai’s seven lakes. The civic sources stated that the current water stock in the lakes will be sufficient for the next five months only.

Currently, the water levels have reached 52.84 per cent, which brings to 7,64,741 million litres. If reports are to be believed, this water stock is sufficient to last for nearly 130 days, experts claimed.

However, this represents the lowest water storage compared to the levels of the previous year - 88.20 per cent in 2022 and 62.79 per cent in 2021 -- raising concerns about water supply.

While Tulsi Lake began overflowing on July 20, the other lakes are still experiencing a rise in water levels.

The data shared by the civic body showed that the water level in Tansa is at 91.55 per cent. At Modak-Sagar, 81.29 per cent of water stock is available, while in middle and Upper Vaitarna 61.74 per cent and 24.29 per cent respectively is available. Bhatsa has 44.61 per cent stock and Vihar is filled upto 94 per cent.

To deal with this situation, the civic authorities have planned a comprehensive review of the rainfall in the next 15 days, which will determine whether there is a need to increase water conservation measures. With this, the BMC will take a decision to increase the water cut in the city.

To ensure a sufficient water supply for the entire year, the lakes need to maintain a water stock of 14.47 lakh ML by October 1.

Due to the delay in rainfall and depleting water stock, the BMC took the decision to impose a 10% water cut from July 1
