As the coronavirus cases in Mumbai see a significant drop, there is no cap on assembly of worshipers in place on the occasion of Mahashivratri this year, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Mahashivratri, marks the marriage of Lord Shiva with Parvati, is being celebrated today, March 1. In Mumbai, many devotees of Lord Shiva flock to shivalas and other shrines to pray on Mahashivratri.

However, the temple trusts have enforced COVID-19 norms like wearing of masks, sanitising and maintain social distancing.

In addition, some may also prevent people from bringing offerings of milk, belpatra and fruit, and debar entry into the 'garbh griha' to touch the idol.

Babulnath is on of the oldest temple in Mumbai and till date, thousands of devotees make their way to this holy site and offer milk to the stone linga located in Malabar Hills area. Though the numbers have subsequently dropped in the last two years due to the pandemic.

The Babulnath Shiv mandir will welcome the public until 10.00 pm on its most important festival. Senior administrative officer said that they had requested people to avoid bringing offerings and would disallow entry into the inner sanctum.

The Shiv Ganesh Mandir in Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri, will remain open till 12.30 am. The shrine was being adorned with varieties of marigolds, carnations and roses Monday. At least 10,000 devotees arrive through the day.
