On Monday, former Mumbai City FC player and Uruguayan football legend Diego Forlan said that he was willing to continue playing for Mumbai City FC after his first season in India. Speaking at an event, Forlan, who is one of the brand ambassadors of La Liga, said that he wanted to come back to the team but the management thought otherwise.

Forlan has been an integral player for Mumbai City as he scored five goals in 12 games and helped his team make it to the semifinal in the third season (2016) of the Indian Super League.

Speaking at the event, he said,

I wanted to come back here (Mumbai), but they did not offer me (a contract). I did not have the opportunity of coming back to Mumbai, which I wanted to."

He also said that India needs to lay emphasis on grassroots development in places where the sport is popular to grow as a footballing superpower. He pointed out that places like Kerala, Kolkata and Goa, where people are 'crazy about football' must be taken advantage of.

“So if you are starting work at the grassroots level, you should focus on these places, start building from there and then maybe get to the other places,” suggested the former Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, and Inter Milan player.

The sixth edition of the competition kickstarts with two-time finalists Kerala Blasters FC playing host to two-time champions ATK in a traditional clash of the Titans on October 20.
